Myths about sunscreen

016808BC-7025-457D-9090-102E7BA7C84EWe are all aware about the importance of using sunscreen. We know that sunscreen helps to protect our skin from UVA and UVB rays. It is important to be aware of which type of sunscreen is best for you. This may include physical or chemical sunscreen. However there are myths about sunscreen that we often hear. There is no proof that the myths about sunscreen is true.

Myth 1: People of color don’t need to apply sunscreen.

This is a one of the most common myth people believe. This is due to people believe that if you are a skin of color you have enough melanin to protect you from the sun. However, this is not entirely true. As they would still require to use SPF 30 or SPF 50 to protect them from premature ageing, hyperpigmentation and skin cancer.

Myth 2: SPF in the make provides enough protection.

This is a quite popular myth people have. However, make up normally contain low amounts of SPF such as SPF 10,  which is not enough to protect the face. Instead you are suppose to use at least SPF 30 to be protected from the sun.

Myth 3: You don’t need sunscreen indoors

906604D2-7F96-4C71-890A-C862C24AE3DAThis is another popular myth about sunscreen application. As we are aware that sunscreen needs to be applied when you going out and when there is any sun exposure. However, when in the home we feel we are protected from the sun, as we are not physically outside. But this is our biggest misconception. As UVA rays can still penetrate through Windows’s, this is the one responsible for causing skin cancers. Also blue light rays from phones and computers can cause Melasma , fine lines and wrinkles. So It is best that even when indoors use a mineral sunscreen to help you to be fully protected from UVA and UVB rays.

Myth 4: All sunscreens are the same, so there is no right or wrong one

This is actually a misconception people make when they buy sunscreen. There are two types of sunscreen known as chemical and physicsl sunscreen. Physical sunscreen act as mineral base, which offers  broad spectrum protection by blocking UVA and UVB rays.  Wheras, chemical sunscreen don’t block it but absorbs the rays into the skin. Which is then broken down. It evident that mineral sunscreen is the way forward to achieve full protection.
