Hormonal acne When the progesterone hormone is lower that the estrogen hormone. This gives a rise in acne as it increases the activity of androgens. For instance, testosterone, DHT and DHEAS are all androgens that increases the production of acne. Thus, it is important to a check for these androgens.

However, cortisol is another hormone that is produced in response to stress. This also has an impact on the skin causing acne. This is a major reason why we get flair ups during stressful time. It is best to get this checked so that you are able to either take supplements to lower the cortisol level in the body or to do relaxing mediation exercise to relieve you of stress. Thus, an important hormone in relation to acne.

On the other hand, insulin resistance can be a reason for acne caused by androgens. So it best to check for this. As well as if you have PCOS or high level of testosterone gives a increase rise of acne. Thus best to check for all these and insulin is useful.

What are the ways to get your hormone tested?

  • Blood test can be away of testing your hormones that can contribute to your acne.
  • Saliva test can be another method that is accurate. However, not many doctors do saliva tests.
  • Urine test can be done to test hormones. It is a great method to test a variety of hormones in one go.
  • If you feel that your acne is due to sugar then it is best to get yourself tested for insulin resistance. Also it is best to keep your sugar levels balanced to keep your acne under control.

Ensure that you don’t have these tests done when your on birth control pills, As it won’t give you an accurate reading.
